Meditation Resources – Sitting

Meditation is FREE!  Meditation is like going shopping in the greatest mall in the universe!

It is a journey of the mind through the cosmos of the body – and sometimes looks like an entire wondrous galaxy of potential.  No, I’m not on drugs!

When I meditate, there’s the usual “monkey mind” detritus to wade through and the constant reminder to the mind to get back to focusing on the breath on the space of my upper lip just under the nostrils.

When my body is still and my mind is focused, then the universe inside us all reveals itself to this little black duck.  No white light, as yet, but such calm and being in the present – it’s a beach holiday for the soul.

So get out your cushions, find your best position, close your eyes and start BREATHING!

Vipassana Meditation

Vipassana is directly handed down by Buddha.

This method was all but lost in India but kept alive in Burma.  In the last century, it saw a reflowering in India courtesy of the revered Late S.N.Goenka. It is practised now all over the world and also in Australia, using a set of video recordings by Goenkaji.  Vipassana is the art of sitting still and focusing on the breath, the warmth it makes on your top lip, for an hour at a time.

The stilling of the mind, the serenity of the soul, the surge of happiness and peace – these are the wonderful gifts of Vipassana Meditation

Raja Yoga Meditation

Raja Yoga Meditation

Raga Yoga is spiritual growth through positive thinking and meditation.  Raja Yoga is linked to a Higher Self element, a God figure, but there is no hard-core pushing of values onto participants.  I came away from their Melbourne Centre back in the mid-90s feeling only loved and lovable.  It’s a very gentle and nurturing form of meditation

How to Practice The Way to a Meaningful Life

How to Practice: The Way to a Meaningful Life

This is a very accessible book on how to actually DO.  Many books are on theory but this is the practical guide to being a more peaceful, happy and compassionate person.  Again, like any other book that promises happiness, it all depends on how well we actually do the hard yards!  Our engagement with the practice is the key – the book itself is only aguide.  But it’s an easy to read one – and the tone of the writing is very friendly and calm and helpful

This is a year-long guide to a meditation practice whose focus is Jesus.  It’s not so much a Christian method but it does use Jesus as its pivot.  Every day of one year has a meditation practice that takes only a couple of minutes to read – a daily lesson if you like – and then it asks that you meditate on the lesson for around 10 – 20 minutes.  By the end of the year you will KNOW!  It’s a lovely gentle way to enlightenment without the hard sell
